How Operations Die: The Costly Failure Modes

Building the Failure-Prevention Routine

The daily and per-cycle discipline that keeps the five killers out — turned into a repeatable, staff-runnable SOP.

6 min read

None of the five failure modes are defeated by talent in the moment. They're defeated by a routine that runs whether or not anyone feels like it — the same reason a lab notebook beats a good memory. The point of an SOP is that a competent staff member, not just the master grower, can execute it and catch drift before it becomes loss.

Standard Operating Procedure
Daily & per-cycle failure-prevention checklist
Goal: Catch the five catastrophic failure modes (mold, mites, EC/pH drift, HVAC, HpLVd) while they're still cheap to fix.Cadence: Daily walk + per-cycle gates
  1. 1Daily — read climate at canopy height: confirm VPD in band (veg ≥0.8 kPa, flower ≥1.0 kPa, late flower 1.3–1.6). Anything sagging toward 0.6 kPa is a mold warning — investigate airflow/dehum before it's visible.
  2. 2Daily — verify HVAC and dehumidification are holding under full lights-on load, not just at night. Confirm alarms are armed. A silent alarm is the same as no alarm.
  3. 3Daily — scout for pests on new growth and undersides; log first colonies. Act on the first colony, not the first infestation.
  4. 4Every irrigation cycle — check feed EC/pH at the emitter AND runoff EC/pH. Feed drift or runoff EC climbing >~0.3 mS/cm above feed means salts are stacking; correct with runoff before lockout.
  5. 5Per batch of media — verify field capacity and dryback are in band (coco: avoid >40% loss; rockwool: never below ~25–30% VWC). Log it.
  6. 6Incoming genetics — quarantine and scout all new clones 2–4 weeks; RT-qPCR-index mothers for HpLVd before anything enters production.
  7. 7Cloning/pruning/trimming — single-use or heat-sterilized (160 °C ≥10 min) blades per plant. Never rely on a chemical tool-dip for viroid control.
  8. 8Post-harvest — dry to 0.55–0.65 water activity (verify, don't eyeball stem-snap); cure at 58–62% internal RH. Stop burping only when RH holds 58–62% after a full closed day.
