Pheno-Hunting & the Selection Scorecard

How to run a structured pheno-hunt at commercial scale — pop size, how many seeds to find a keeper, a weighted scoring rubric across yield, potency, morphology, and grow-ability, and the two-stage cull that turns 200 seeds into one mother.

A pheno-hunt is a funnel, not a lottery

Seed is your discovery tool (established in the seeds-vs-clones lesson); pheno-hunting is the disciplined process that turns a bag of seed into the single individual you will clone for years. The mistake amateurs make is falling in love with the first plant that smells good. A commercial hunt is a funnel with defined gates: you pop a statistically meaningful population, score every plant against the same rubric, cull hard at each gate, and validate the finalists by cloning them out and running the clones side by side. The output is not 'a nice plant' — it is a repeatable, screened, indexed mother whose numbers you can defend to a buyer.
