Move on roots, not on the calendar

A young plant steps up through progressively larger media: starter plug → 1.5–4" block → slab or pot. The mistake is transplanting on a schedule. The correct trigger is always visible roots — you move a plant up only when its roots have colonized the current container and are showing at the sides or base. Transplant too early into too much media and the small root mass can't dry the media back, inviting over-saturation, algae, and stalled establishment.
