Building the Release Calendar: What to Order, How Much, and When

Preventative sachets are a subscription, not a purchase — how to size predator orders to canopy area, sequence generalists ahead of specialists, and hold coverage across a perpetual-harvest schedule so the predators are established before the pest ever arrives.

The department's prevention lessons established the rule: on flowering cannabis almost every curative miticide is off the table, so predators have to already be working when the first pest lands. This lesson is the operational build — the actual order sheet. The core design decision is that beneficials are a recurring spend tied to canopy area and crop timing, not a one-off you deploy when you see damage. If your first release is a reaction to stippling in week 5, you have already lost the race: a slow-release sachet takes days to emerge and roughly 4 weeks to run out, and a specialist predator crashes once it eats its prey out. You establish the standing army during propagation and veg, then top it up on a fixed cadence.

Generalists hold the line; specialists win the battle

The two-tier logic that runs every good program: generalist phytoseiid mites (Amblyseius swirskii, Neoseiulus cucumeris, californicus) survive on pollen and alternate prey, so they persist in the canopy for weeks with nothing to eat and are your standing preventative layer. Specialists (Phytoseiulus persimilis, which eats only spider mites at 5-7 prey/day) reproduce explosively on a hot spot but starve and vanish once the prey is gone — they are a targeted curative strike, released onto a mapped outbreak, not a preventative. Order generalists on a schedule; keep specialists in reserve for the scout's hot-spot report.
