The Quarantine Room: Screening Every Clone Before It Touches Production

The single highest-leverage biosecurity control is refusing to let unscreened genetics into the building. The physical quarantine room, the 2-4 week hold-and-scout, RT-qPCR indexing on root tissue, and the clean-in protocols (including the hot-water clone dip) that stop you importing the outbreak you'll spend the whole cycle fighting.

The prevention lessons named quarantine as one of the four legs of IPM; this is the build-out. The uncomfortable truth behind most catastrophic infestations and every HpLVd disaster is that the pathogen was imported — on a clone from another facility, a 'free' cut from a friend, a pheno-hunt seed lot, or a mother brought in without indexing. Once inside, russet mite, broad mite, and hop latent viroid spread on your own tools and irrigation faster than you can scout them. A quarantine room is the cheapest insurance in the entire facility: it converts an unknown incoming plant into a known one before it can contaminate a single production room.

HpLVd is why you cannot skip this

You can scout your way to catching most pests eventually. You cannot scout your way to catching hop latent viroid — it has no leaf spot, is often asymptomatic for weeks, and by the time an infected clone dudds visibly it has already been on your shears and in your shared water. Surveys have found the viroid in a large majority of tested facilities, with industry losses estimated in the billions per year, and the pathway in is almost always unscreened incoming stock. Quarantine plus RT-qPCR indexing is the only reliable gate.
