The most steerable — and least forgiving — substrate
Stone wool is inert, sterile, and homogeneous with a nearly linear water-release curve — it gives up water evenly and can be driven to very low water content before the plant shows stress. That makes it the most steerable commercial substrate. But it has near-zero CEC: no buffering, no safety net. Slab EC and VWC respond to your feed almost instantly, so precision emitters and in-substrate sensors are effectively mandatory.
